This beautiful 30 x 40 inch original oil painting is part of my Ancient Tableau series. It features an African Lion in conversation with ancient Assyrian stone lion sculptures.
This artwork is part of a series of about 40 canvases that I painted for exhibitions in both Canada and abroad. Only 9 of the paintings remain.
The lion is painted with thin layers of oil in a realistic fashion to feature the softness of his fur and texture. His pose is intentionally calm and relaxed in counterpoint to the raging lion sculptures in the background. I wanted to juxtapose the real animal against the sculpted versions which are stylized and stereotypical in their fierceness.
This collection spanned almost 40 paintings, most of which have found forever homes all over the world.
This painting is stretched on exhibition style canvas and painted around the edge so it can hang unframed. It was created with oil paint applied in thin layers to build up the surface detail on stretched cotton canvas. The crumbling texture of stone, the lion's fur and mane are painted with fine brushstrokes, making it feel like you can reach out and touch the real thing.
PAINTING SIZE: 30 x 40 inches.
