A perfect mate to The Suitor, this beautiful 30 x 40 inch original oil painting of a lioness is part of my Ancient Tableau series. It features an African Lioness set against a stone relief of an ancient Assyrian lion relief.
This artwork is part of a series of at least 40 canvases that I painted for exhibitions in both Canada and abroad. Only a handfull of the original paintings are still available.
The lioness is painted with thin layers of oil in a realistic fashion to enhance the softness of her fur and texture. The Lioness's pose is intentionally calm and relaxed in counterpoint to the raging lion relief in the background. I wanted to juxtapose the real animal against the stone version which is stylized and stereotypical in its fierceness.
This painting is stretched on exhibition style cotton canvas and painted around the edge so it can hang unframed.
